The CARE Institute for AI Strategy

The CARE Institute for AI Strategy is a human-centered AI consulting and education institute founded by Kelly Spain, Certified AI Consultant, educator, and framework architect with more than twenty years in education and more than a decade in higher education.

We exist because most AI conversations get the order wrong. Technology is proposed before institutions are understood. Solutions are deployed before strategies are designed. And the communities that stand to benefit most from responsible AI adoption are the ones left navigating the consequences of decisions that were never made with them in mind.

The CARE Institute changes that order. Every engagement we design, every strategy we build, and every tool we deploy begins with a foundational commitment: the human being inside the institution matters more than the system being built around them.

At The CARE Institute, AI works for institutions. Not the other way around.

We serve higher education institutions, nonprofits, K-12 organizations, and mission-driven businesses at every stage of AI adoption. Our work is grounded in a proprietary three-layer governance architecture that moves from philosophical foundation through consulting practice to client-facing operational intelligence.

Our Mission

The CARE Institute for AI Strategy exists to ensure that every institution navigating AI adoption does so with clarity, accountability, relevance, and equity built into its foundation from day one.

Our Vision

A future where human-centered AI governance is the standard, not the exception, in education, business, and public service.

Our Origin

The Founding Story

The framework was built from twenty years of watching what happens when human beings are left out of the technology decisions that shape their lives.

Kelly Spain did not set out to build a consulting institute. She set out to solve a problem she kept encountering in her own work as an educator: institutions were being handed AI solutions before anyone had asked them a single question about who they were, what they valued, or what they actually needed.

Over more than two decades in education, Kelly developed a deep understanding of what happens when technology arrives faster than the people responsible for it are prepared to receive it. She watched institutions adopt tools without strategy, deploy systems without governance, and make decisions about AI that would affect thousands of students and staff members with no framework for ensuring those decisions were equitable, accountable, or sustainable.

She built the C.A.R.E. Model for Human-Centered AI Strategy as her answer to that problem. A framework grounded in four pillars, Clarity and Communication, Accountability and Access, Relevance and Responsibility, and Equity and Empowerment, that puts human values at the center of every AI decision.

The CARE Institute for AI Strategy was founded to bring that framework to institutions that need it most. To make human-centered AI strategy not just a concept but a practice. Not just a framework but a lived experience for every institution that engages with us.

Why the CARE Institute

Kelly Spain holds the designation of Certified AI Consultant, internationally accredited through the International Association of Artificial Intelligence Consultants and CPD-certified through the CPD Standards Office. This certification guarantees that every AI strategy, training module, and consulting engagement produced through The CARE Institute adheres to the most stringent professional and ethical standards in the field.

The CARE Institute is uniquely aligned with the U.S. AI Action Plan and centers the lived realities of educators, creators, entrepreneurs, and community advocates who seek to use AI with integrity and intention.

Beyond certification, what distinguishes The CARE Institute is the depth of the framework behind it. The C.A.R.E. Model, AUBRYCE, and CEBRAYA represent years of applied research, curriculum development, and real-world consulting practice. This is not a framework built in a boardroom. It was built in classrooms, in community organizations, and in the daily work of an educator who refused to accept that equity and innovation were mutually exclusive.

Human-centered AI strategy is not a niche. It is the only kind that works.

Ready to Work Together?

Every engagement with The CARE Institute begins the same way. With a conversation. Iris, our Institutional Readiness Assessor, will ask you about your institution, your relationship with technology, the challenges your leadership is navigating, and the vision you have for where you want to go.

There are no wrong answers. The most useful thing you can do is be honest.

Everything you share goes directly to Kelly Spain. She reviews every intake personally. Nothing moves forward without her. Because at The CARE Institute, every institution deserves to be truly understood before anything is built.
